Receiving a dementia diagnosis can be a life-changing experience. But knowing what to expect can make it less overwhelming. Let’s break down the process into manageable steps.

Step 1: Chat with Your GP

Start by sharing your concerns and symptoms with your GP. They’ll do a physical exam, review your medical history, and might do a quick cognitive test.

Step 2: Meet the Specialist

If your GP suspects dementia, you’ll be referred to a specialist (like a geriatrician, psychiatrist, or neurologist). They’ll do a more in-depth assessment, including:

  • Detailed medical history
  • Cognitive and neuropsychological tests
  • Physical exam
  • Review of medications

Step 3: Comprehensive Assessment

  • This involves a series of evaluations, including:

    • Cognitive tests
    • Neuropsychological tests for memory, language, and executive function
    • Functional assessments for daily living skills
    • Review of medical history, medications, and lifestyle

Step 4: Getting Your Diagnosis

The specialist will share the diagnosis with you and your family. This can be tough, so have support nearby and ask questions! They’ll:

  • Explain the diagnosis and implications
  • Discuss treatment options and management strategies
  • Provide guidance on lifestyle changes and support services such as My Aged Care

Step 5: Contact My Aged Care

Once you have a diagnosis for your loved one, we recommend you call My Aged Care to request an assessment. Their number is 1800 200 422. They will discuss support and care options with you.

One support option is The Cottage, our dedicated day centre with recreational activities for people with a dementia diagnosis.

To access services at The Cottage, you will need a referral code for “Social Support Group” from My Aged Care. Once you have your referral code, call The Cottage on 0423 082 650 to discuss your care options.
