Maureen Sale is hanging up her volunteer hat today after 12 years of faithful service to SECC.
Maureen began as a Volunteer English Teacher in 2010, bringing her education skills to the SECC table.
Community members from a range of cultures came forward to receive ESL training from Maureen twice a week in Eastlakes.
Volunteer Manager Sue Ohanian says Maureen has been an enormously dedicated volunteer with an easy-going personality.
“Nothing has been a problem for her,” Sue says. “Maureen’s commitment to the English classes (at times, two different classes per week) and her genuine desire to help the students has been outstanding. She has been the face of the English classes for so long, it is hard to imagine that she will no longer be in that role.”
Maureen was recognised by SECC for her efforts and expertise with the Maisie Forster Volunteer Award in 2014.
She has fond memories of connecting with people from countries such as Vietnam, China, and Afghanistan, who needed language learning support.
“The classes became a connection point for different cultures,” Maureen says.
“People came because they wanted to learn English, but the social contact was even more valuable. I loved that I could help facilitate connections and friendships.”
Maureen speaks highly of the support shown to her by SECC managers such as Kate Melhopt, Sue Ohanian and Julie Gray over the years.
“I have made so many good friends, and I really appreciate all the lunches, picnics and support SECC has offered our volunteer community,” she says.
“It’s sad to be moving on, but I know I will make way for another person with a passion for teaching English.”
Sue Ohanian says Maureen was one of the stalwarts of the volunteer team and she will be missed.
“On behalf of SECC and all the hundreds of students that you have helped, we say thank you Maureen. We wish you well and we hope you stay in touch,” Sue says.
